But I still gloat, because I have a secret. For almost every disadvantage of recumbent bikes, there&#8217;s an equal and opposite advantage. Ordinary diamond frame bike riders haven&#8217;t a clue. They&#8217;re caught in the ordinary, crowd-following, ingrained world of the wedgie. Likely, they&#8217;ve been simply misinformed. They have zero experience riding a recumbent, so consequently their imagination carries them off into the belief that bents are weird, awkward, bizarre, dysfunctional, and possibly dangerous. They think bents are mostly for wackos who want to show-off and attract attention. And I&#8217;ll admit, I like the attention. I like standing out from the crowd, especially on the road. Mostly I like knowing that the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>real\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">reasons for riding a bent can be quantified, explained and enumerated. Words, though, don&#8217;t mean a thing until you experience the ride for yourself. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In the spirit of fairness, here is the list of cons for recumbents. I surprised myself by finding ten of them\u2014wasn&#8217;t expecting that many. And I&#8217;ll surprise you with a counter (or more) for all but two of them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Cons\u2014<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Seat lower, head lower, feels more vulnerable\/less visible to traffic.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Harder to start uphill.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Can&#8217;t rise off saddle to engage upper body and<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">gravity for hill climbs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Can&#8217;t rise off saddle for bumps and rough roads.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">More body contact with bike, ride feels harsher.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">More difficult to turn head to look behind.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Always in same position on long rides.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Heavier than most road bikes.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nonstandard frame makes for difficult rack mounting\/transporting.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Cost more, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">especially <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">at the lower end, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">makes for <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">entry level barrier.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Pros\u2014<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Head position looks forward (not hunched over the road), better view of the scenery and traffic.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">lower center of gravity, more stable.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">less distance to fall, no flying head first over the handlebars.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">unusual appearance gets more attention from drivers.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">head is about the same height as a car driver (on most two-wheel recumbents).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Starting uphill is part of the learning curve; once learned, it&#8217;s not an issue.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Instead you make full use of your leg strength by pushing back on the seat, not limited by your own weight.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Don&#8217;t have to get off saddle at a stop.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">No doubt, you&#8217;ll feel the road more (wider tires help*), but your hands will have an easier time.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors\u2014all riders should use mirrors.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Always in same comfortable position.<\/span><\/span>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">no back pain.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">no neck pain.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">no arm\/wrist pain.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">horizontal position makes for easier blood flow return from hands\/arms and legs.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>no perineum pain,\u00a0<\/b>just as important for women as men.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">no need for special padded pants.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">while other riders start complaining, recumbent riders are still having fun and ready for more.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0Heavier, yes, but. . .<\/span><\/span>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">torso is \u201copen\u201d allowing for deeper breathing.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">more aerodynamic, less drag, faster on flats and downhill.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and again #3 helps compensate.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Yes, challenging, use racks that bike tires rest on, rather than hanging by the frame.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">More than pays for itself with benefits.<\/span><\/span>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">enjoy riding more.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">enjoy riding farther.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0enjoy the view\u2014the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">scenery<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, the trees, the sky, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the horizon. . .<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>enjoy how good you feel after every ride.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And a bonus advantage that applies to MBB (Moving Bottom Bracket), or front wheel drive recumbents : More upper body use\u2014arms and abdominals. The harder you peddle, the more counterforce your arms need to apply to the keep the front wheel going in the intended direction, particularly when climbing. This works in a way similar to standing on a diamond frame. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And a double bonus for MBBs, you can feel the power <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">going to the front wheel. You&#8217;ll accelerate faster. It&#8217;s something I noticed the first time I rode one. For me, that feeling the power is one of the biggest draws to MBB and the number one reason I ride one. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">All that sounds like a sales pitch. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">t&#8217;s too easy to start<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> proselytizing, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I can&#8217;t help it. I ride more, lots more, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">since switching to a recumbent<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. I&#8217;d never <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">have done<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> that on a wedgie.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> I<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">t&#8217;s<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> certain that if more riders tried a recumbent, there&#8217;d be more on the road, lots more. But it takes a big leap to make the conversion. Change is challenging. The unknown is uncomfortable. It&#8217;s easier to stay with the common and conventional. A smoother, more comfortable ride is not just more pleasant, it&#8217;s less fatiguing. However, there are <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">many<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> factors involved that make for a complex balancing act between rim width, tire width, tire selection and inflation pressure.
