What are words? What is language? Starting with questions, I don\u2019t like it, but it\u2019s necessary in this case to establish a clear definition of each concept.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In basic terms, words are spoken or written units of meaning, a sign or symbol that stand for an object (cat), an action or state of being (run or feel), a notion (fast). Language is putting words together in a way that communicates something more than single units. It forms complex structures of thought, \u201cThe cat runs fast.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I know, that\u2019s obvious to a human who\u2019s been listening to language since birth, and speaking it not long after. It\u2019s not so obvious when we try to get a computer to use words and construct language. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Computers don\u2019t think or learn the way humans do. In fact, computers neither think nor learn. Computers don\u2019t have the necessary sensory input and feedback <\/span><\/span><\/span>mechanisms<\/span><\/span><\/span> to understand what any word means, and certainly no ability for stringing words together into language. Without the understanding of word meaning or how to form complete thoughts, there is no language. Dogs are smarter than the most powerful computer in the world. Rover knows the meaning of many words that he hears daily because they correspond to his experience of the world. These connections between the sound of <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>word and the phenomenal experience create<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span> meaning in a dog\u2019s brain. Computers have no sensory <\/span><\/span><\/span>input<\/span><\/span><\/span> to<\/span><\/span><\/span> link experience with the associated words to create meaning. Think about how reading a story can stimulate in one\u2019s brain an imaginary experience, or conversely, how we can recall a past experience and recreate it with language. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It’s a huge challenge to get<\/span><\/span><\/span> c<\/span><\/span><\/span>omputers <\/span><\/span><\/span>to do anything with language. <\/span><\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span><\/span>o start with, t<\/span><\/span><\/span>hey<\/span><\/span><\/span> need to be <\/span><\/span><\/span>fed immense quantities of <\/span><\/span><\/span>data, words <\/span><\/span><\/span>and phrases, along with instructions for how to assemble sentences grammatically. They\u2019re given massive amounts of statistical information on the likelihood of word sequence. Large Language Models <\/span><\/span><\/span>(LLM)<\/span><\/span><\/span> then <\/span><\/span><\/span>get \u201ctrained\u201d in part from being corrected by humans, in part by self-correcting algorithms. They\u2019ve also been programmed to \u201clearn\u201d by s<\/span><\/span><\/span>earching<\/span><\/span><\/span> the internet to collect samples <\/span><\/span><\/span>for reference,<\/span><\/span><\/span> for imitation, or to copy verbatim. Then with brute force processing power they crank out a semblance of language that on occasion sounds much like a real person may have spoken or written it. The major difference is that a human knows the meaning of its output, the computer doesn\u2019t know dog shit from chocolate. <\/span><\/span><\/span>There’re still more complications. T<\/span><\/span><\/span>o avoid being too real<\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>certain words and phrases must be censored. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Some <\/span><\/span><\/span>special<\/span><\/span><\/span> words<\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>such as shit, that<\/span><\/span><\/span> we all use in ordinary, everyday language are not allowed. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Some p<\/span><\/span><\/span>hrases, <\/span><\/span><\/span>like \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>go <\/span><\/span><\/span>get fucked,” are out of line. S<\/span><\/span><\/span>ome ideas, insert <\/span><\/span><\/span>your favorite ism,<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0deemed wrong <\/span><\/span><\/span>get<\/span><\/span><\/span> nixed. We wouldn\u2019t want our computers to be offensive.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But for all their training, learning, <\/span><\/span><\/span>self-censor<\/span><\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span><\/span> and processing power, they\u2019re totally lost with irony, satire, double meaning, with the subtleties of implication. Real humans put more into language than strict<\/span><\/span><\/span>ly literal<\/span><\/span><\/span> meaning. We use words in ways computers can\u2019t fathom. The way words sound, their rhyme, rhythm, assonance, alliteration\u2014computers haven\u2019t a clue. Consequently, computer Generative Predictive Training (the GPT in ChatGPT) tends towards bland homogenous writing. <\/span><\/span><\/span>It’s <\/span><\/span><\/span>writing without style, without cleverness, without conviction. It\u2019s not intelligence. It\u2019s barely smarter than a toaster, if the word smart actually means anything in this context. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>GPT models keep growing, keep using more processing power, and yet, they cannot improve over time no matter how much power, training, or correction is pumped into them. The weaknesses of LLM and GPT are cumulative as they continue to indiscriminately scrape the internet sucking up an ever increasing amount of their own mediocre output\u2014mediocrity squared\u2014not a good recipe. For all the previously stated reasons, it’s impossible for these programs to improve. The spiral down is a result of the lack of understanding of words and language, by the computers, and by the programmers. There is no future for computers to write anything with insight, complexity, or competence.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now, <\/span><\/span><\/span>I’m going to spiral down<\/span><\/span><\/span> with even more questions. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Who <\/span><\/span><\/span>really believes<\/span><\/span><\/span> A.I. is smart? <\/span><\/span><\/span>Why is so much time and energy being wasted on making computers do what people already do <\/span><\/span><\/span>fairly <\/span><\/span><\/span>well, and <\/span><\/span><\/span>almost effortlessly<\/span><\/span><\/span>? Wh<\/span><\/span><\/span>at’s the point of<\/span><\/span><\/span> try<\/span><\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span><\/span> to make computers more <\/span><\/span><\/span>like <\/span><\/span><\/span>human<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span> (emotional\/irrational)<\/span><\/span><\/span>? We have over eight billions of us already, ain\u2019t that \u2018nuff?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
